How to figure out what size belt you need to order for a custom size belt sander 

Sanding belt dimensions : How to measure your sanding belt

While getting your sanding belt dimensions can seem intuitive, its often the simple things we forgot to do. Sanding belt dimensions are always referred to with the Width first, then the length. An example of this would be a 37" x 60" belt size. 37" would be the width, and 60" being the length. NOW that we got that out of the way, another important concept is to fully understand the length of your custom sanding belts.

A sanding BELT is just that, a belt...meaning that if you are trying to measure a sanding belt that you have lying around, the belt is completely joined together. To get the proper dimensions of your sanding belt you need to measure it one of two ways. 

1. Split the belt at the diagonal joint where the splice is (cut through the tape with a razor or knife. This will now give you the ability to measure the belt from one end to the other end. This is by far the most accurate way of measuring a sanding belt to figure out what your custom belt size is. 

2. Lay the belt flat and press down as much as possible and measure from one end ot the other end. THEN remember that its a belt so we need to double the measurement! for instance if you lay the belt flat with the ends bent, and you get something like 12" for instance, you would double that to get 24 since you have to account for the other side of the belt. 

I figured out what size my sanding belt is, now what? 

Now that you have figured out what size your sanding belt is we now need to figure out what type of material it is.

What type of material is your custom sanding belt? The 4 types of abrasives we have to choose from are aluminum oxide, zirconia, ceramic and silicone carbide. The easiest way we can figure this out is by looking at the color of the belt. 

Aluminum Oxide - Aluminum oxide sanding belts are always brown in color. This color can vary between brown and a brownish-red color. If your belt fits this description it is more than likely aluminum Oxide. Your belt will sometimes say A/O or ALO on the back, although this is not always the case. ALuminum oxide can be used to sand metal, wood, plastics, natural composites and many others. The only thing i have never seen this material used on is glass. 

Silicone carbide - Silicon Carbide is always black in color and can sometimes be a dark grey color. Silicone carbide is typically used in glass fabricating operations and for fine finishing on wood in the higher grits such as 220 or 320. Silicone carbide leaves finer line grains than aluminum oxide, zirconia or ceramic and is not used typically for heavy stock removal applications. You can sometimes see that silicone carbide is identified on the back fo the sanding belt with an S/C , however this is not always the case. 

Zirconia - Zirconia sanding belts are always one of two colors, either a green color or blue color. THis cary vary between bright green and dark green to dark blue and light blue but these colors almost always signify that the belt is zirconia. This is usually identified on the back of the belt material with a Z somewhere, either next to the grit ( Z60 ) for example or by itself with a Z/A. 

Ceramic - Ceramic sanding belts can vary a little bit more than the other materials i mentioned in color. Ceramic materials, depending on the manufacturer are mostly RED or a bright red color. I have seen some manufacturers color their material in a purple or bright green color, but this is usually on specialty products.
