HOW DO YOU MEASURE A SANDING BELT PROPERLY?

You can get the proper measurement of your sanding belt by taking your ruler or measuring tape and measuring the width AND the length ( Width X Length ). An example of this would be a 4" (wide) X 36" (length) as demonstrated in our video below. Sanding belts come in many widths and many lengths so getting the most precise measurement for your belts is absolutely necessary when it comes time to re-order your sanding belts.

THERE IS TWO MAIN WAYS TO MEASURE YOUR SANDING BELTS:

1. You can measure a brand new belt by easily first measuring the width, then laying the belt down as flat as possible without bending or creasing the belt in a way that will damage it, measuring from one end to the other, then DOUBLING the size as this is a belt and NOT a flat sheet in this instance.

2. The second way would be to take your belt and easily measure the width of the belt. After you have measured the width, cut the belt in half, either directly down the middle or along the tape joint. Once you have done this and lay the sheet out, measure from the bottom end of the right side and measure directly across to the left side. This measurement will give you your belt LENGTH. This is the best method for measuring your sanding belt if it is an old, used belt that you don't care to use anymore. This is the most accurate because when you are talking about lapidary belts or weird sized belts, they can sometimes have imprecise or unintuitive sizes such as a length of 25-7/32 inches. If you were measuring using method one you might not have gotten this precise measurement and instead rounded up or down, which could cause issues on your machine.
