Most 24–25" wide belt sanders in small fabrication shops were sold as woodworking machines, and they turn into very capable sheet-metal graining machines the moment a non-woven belt goes on the head. These 25" x 60" surface conditioning belts are that belt: aluminum oxide grain carried in a nylon web on a reinforced scrim backing, built to hold tension and track on an automated machine while laying a single continuous grain line across the full width of a stainless, aluminum or steel panel.
We sell them one belt at a time in Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine. Run one after a 120–220 grit coated belt to blend the scratch, remove heat tint and mill haze, deburr laser-cut and sheared edges, and leave the directional satin that a brushed panel is expected to have.

Which grade should you put on a 25-inch wide belt sander?
Choose the grade by the scratch you are starting from and the finish you have been asked for. Every grade is the same web, backing and belt length; only the grain size changes.
- Coarse (40-60 Grit) — brown: the most aggressive web. Use it to knock down mill scale haze, light rust, oxidation and the scratch left by an 80 grit coated belt, or to give aluminum a bold, open brushed grain. It will remove noticeable material if you lean on it, so set the head pressure light.
- Medium (80-120 Grit) — maroon: the general-purpose deburring and blending grade. Run it after a 120 grit coated belt to soften burrs on laser-cut and sheared parts and to put a clean, medium satin on steel before paint or powder coat.
- Very Fine (180-240 Grit) — blue: the grade fabricators reach for when a drawing calls for a #4-style directional finish on stainless sheet. Run it after a 180–220 grit coated belt and it produces the long, fine, uniform grain that matches mill-finished #4 stock.
- Ultra Fine (320-400 Grit) — grey: a fine satin that is one step short of polishing. Use it as the last head before buffing, for decorative aluminum trim, or on parts that need a smooth, low-reflectivity finish without visible scratch lines. Few suppliers offer this grade in a 25-inch width.
If you only stock one belt for mixed stainless and aluminum work, stock Very Fine. If your work is mostly deburring carbon steel before coating, stock Medium.

Non-woven belts refine the previous scratch; they do not erase it. A part that comes off a 60 grit coated belt still needs a 120 and a 220 coated pass before the Very Fine belt will give a clean #4-style grain.
Which machines take a 25" x 60" surface conditioning belt?

A non-woven belt has no direction arrow and can be mounted either way round. Tension to the machine maker's setting, jog the machine and centre the oscillation before feeding a part. Because the web is thicker and more compliant than a cloth belt, start with the platen or contact drum set lighter than you would for a coated belt of the same size and increase only until the grain line is continuous. Steel and aluminum swarf must not go into a wood-dust collector; use a metal-rated or wet collection system.

How to get the most out of it
- Prepare the surface with a coated belt first. Take the part to 120 grit for a Medium finish or 180–220 grit for Very Fine and Ultra Fine. Our 25" x 60" aluminum oxide and zirconia belts and 25" x 60" metalworking belts are the matching coated belts for this machine size.
- Back the pressure off. The web does the work. Heavy pressure tears fibres out of the belt, shortens its life sharply and puts heat into thin sheet. If the finish is not developing, slow the feed rather than adding pressure.
- Feed in one direction only. Every part goes through the same way, long axis parallel to belt travel, so the grain lines up from panel to panel. Never rotate a part between passes on a directional finish.
- Keep the feed moving. Dwelling under a stationary head leaves a bright band. Feed at a steady speed and let the conveyor carry the part clear before stopping.
- A little lubricant helps on aluminum. A light mist or a wipe of grease stick on the belt keeps aluminum from smearing into the web and gives a cleaner grain. Run stainless and steel dry.
- Keep the belt clean. Non-woven web sheds swarf rather than loading, so strong extraction is usually all it needs. Do not use a crepe belt eraser on a non-woven belt; it pulls the web.
- Store hanging. Hang the belt on a wide dowel or a belt rack away from sunlight and humidity. A folded non-woven belt takes a crease that shows in the finish.

Will a 25" x 60" surface conditioning belt run on a woodworking wide belt sander?
Yes, provided the machine takes a 25" x 60" belt and you manage the swarf. Open-end 24–25" wide belt sanders track and tension a non-woven belt without trouble. Route steel or aluminum dust to a metal-rated or wet collector rather than the wood-dust system, and set head pressure lighter than you would for a coated belt.
Which grade gives a #4 brushed finish on stainless sheet?
The Very Fine (180-240 Grit) blue belt is the grade most fabricators use for a #4-style directional finish. Take the sheet to 180–220 grit with a coated belt first, then run the Very Fine belt at light pressure with the sheet fed long axis parallel to belt travel. Ultra Fine gives a finer, lower-contrast satin.
Why is the grain uneven or banded across the sheet?
Banding on a 25-inch wide belt usually traces to oscillation that is not centred, uneven head pressure across the width, or a part that stopped under the head. Check tracking, level the platen or drum, feed at a steady speed, and make sure the coated-belt scratch underneath is uniform before the non-woven pass.
How much metal does a non-woven belt remove?
Very little. A surface conditioning belt refines the surface rather than cutting it, so sheet thickness and hole sizes on laser-cut parts stay within tolerance. The Coarse grade is the exception at heavy pressure; it will remove measurable material, which is why we recommend the lightest setting that produces a continuous grain.
Can I run this belt with coolant on aluminum?
A light lubricant is fine and often helpful. A mist or a wipe of grease stick keeps soft aluminum from smearing into the web and gives a cleaner, more open grain. Stainless and carbon steel are normally run dry. Do not flood the belt; the scrim backing is not designed for immersion.
